BJJ VS. Karate – the differences
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate might look like similar styles of martial arts but there are a number of very different characteristics.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art characterised by devastating throws, takedowns, sweeps, joint locks and limb manipulation, chokes, and controlling positions. Aside from wrestling and judo, it is one of the only martial arts that offers the unique advantage of taking another human being out of the domain of using kicks and punches in a standing position to the ground where only skills specific to ground martial arts will prevail.
This is the primary difference between BJJ and Karate because where BJJ starts Karate ends, for this reason, it’s one of the best self-defence martial arts for single attacker scenarios.
Meet the Team
Hi, I’m Shane. I grew up on farms travelling around Australia and never really had the opportunity to practice any sports – unless you count chasing sheep or driving tractors! I always had a fascination with Jackie Chan and when we settled in Geelong, I was able to try various styles of martial arts, including Krav Maga and Muay Thai. I continued to practice these forms of martial arts when I moved to Brisbane.
I eventually moved to the Sunshine Coast where I began my BJJ journey in 2008 – while training Freestyle Martial Arts in the early days at Infinity. There were a couple of guys in the club who had been learning some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; and every time I would train with them they would tie me in knots with ease, smile, slap my hand and we’d start again. In those moments when I was getting beaten up, I realised just how effective Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is as a practical & effective martial art. Primarily because most fights end up on the ground.
I immediately began training and learning as much Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as I could and even entered a few competitions; where I managed to bring home a few gold and silver medals. This was a massive accomplishment for me as I had never competed in any sports before. The atmosphere was incredible, and it really kicked off my love for the sport.
Around 2010 we were extremely lucky to have Neil Owen – who had recently moved from the UK – take over our coaching and share his wealth of knowledge with us. Neil’s concept-based training began to open up a whole new world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for me. Positional control, sweeps and submissions began to work for me and I started to see how they all fit into the big picture. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is like a fitness chess game; a real challenge for the mind and body, I was really hooked.
I believe the benefits, camaraderie and fun to be had with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu make it a sport that ticks all the boxes.
I love to compete in local BJJ competitions; but my primary focus is on teaching and sharing my knowledge and passion for this sport with my students as I know it can tremendously improve so many aspects of their life; just as it has with mine.
